ww2dbaseOriginally named Marine Dolphin, Tranquility was renamed as so on 22 Jun 1944, a month before her launch. She was received by the US Navy on 14 Aug 1944 for conversion into a hospital ship. On 27 Apr 1945, she arrived at Pearl Harbor and joined the Service Force of the Pacific Fleet. She served as the base hospital ship at Ulithi between 22 Jul and 3 Aug. On 4 Aug she picked up and treated 166 survivors of the cruiser Indianapolis, delivering them to Guam on 8 Aug. On 27 Aug and 18 Oct, she picked up and treated 766 patients and 788 patients from Apra Harbor, respectively, delivering both groups to San Francisco. She served the remainder of 1945 as a Magic Carpet transport that brought US servicemen back home.
