The Emperor of Japan Planned to Honor WW2-era Japanese POWs in Mongolia
The Emperor of Japan had been visiting WW2 sites significant to the Japanese war experience this year, which marked 80 years since the end of the war. Between 6 and 13 Jul 2025, the Emperor and the Empress will be visiting Mongolia, where somewhere between 12,000 and 15,000 Japanese prisoners of war were held under harsh conditions after the war and employed as forced laborers. About 1,700 of them died during Mongolian captivity. "I will pay tribute to the Japanese people who unwillingly died in the distant land away from home", said the Emperor who had been promoting efforts for the study of history and for maintaining peace.
