ww2dbaseZ44 was laid down by the DeSchiMAG shipyard in Bremen, Germany in Sep 1943, but the lack of priority meant her progress was slow right from the start. She was launched in Jan 1944, but completion work continued to be slow. On 24 Jul 1944, it was decided that the Z44 project was to be abandoned, and her parts were to be removed to repair destroyer Z39. A few days later, she was sunk by a British RAF raid on Bremen. In early Sep 1944, her stern broke off, and she became untouched until she was scrapped in place between 1948 and 1949.
