- The 708-ton British armed steamship Sparta, while steaming from Blyth to Southampton in England, United Kingdom with a cargo of coal was sunk by a mine, ten miles off Dungeness, Sussex, England; nine of the crew lost. Nearby, the 700-ton British cargo ship Corinia, built in 1928 and owned by Northwest Shipping Co.
