- Noticing a nearby 75-millimeter M1917 field gun crew had been wiped out by Japanese fire near Culis on the Bataan Peninsula in the Philippines, Jose Calugas, without orders, gathered a group of volunteers to man the gun, keeping it active against known Japanese positions for several hours. He was recommended for the Medal of Honor for this action, but would not receive the medal until after the end of the war. ww2dbase [Invasion of the Philippine Islands | Jose Calugas | Culis, Bataan | CPC]
