ww2dbaseThe M1917 revolvers were made standard in United States Army service in 1917 by two manufacturers, Colt and Smith & Wesson. The two variants were similar, with the revolvers made by Colt slightly heavier than the ones made by Smith & Wesson (1.1-kg vs. 1-kg, respectively). They were used by Army officers as sidearms during WW1, and during the interwar years many were sold on the civilian market. In the 1930s, many were sold to the Brazilian Army. During WW2 and the Korean War, they remained relatively popular as sidearms. 300,000 were manufactured by Colt and Smith & Wesson combined during the production life.
