ww2dbaseDesigned in 1918, the Mark II fragmentation hand grenades were adopted by the United States military in 1920. Nicknamed "pineapples", they each weighed 1 pound 5 ounces (about 0.6 kilograms). They remained the standard fragmentation grenades of American forces in WW2. The Mk IIA1 variant design was placed in production in 1942. Near the end of the war, the original and the variant designs were renamed Mk 2 and Mk 2A1, respectively. They were replaced by the M26 grenades in the 1950s.

2 Apr 1945 The American Mk II and Mk IIA1 hand grenades were redesignated Mk 2 and Mk 2A1, respectively.
