ww2dbaseThe Cannone da 149/35 A heavy guns were pre-WW1 artillery pieces; about 900 of them remained in active service with the Italian Army in Jun 1940 when Italy entered the European War. They lacked recoil systems, which meant that they required ramps to be placed behind the wheels in order to absorb the recoil energy and they needed to be re-sighted after each shot. In 1940, the proposed successor model Cannone da 149/40 was completed, but the two types of heavy guns continued to serve side-by-side until Sep 1943 when Italy capitulated. Some of the Cannone da 149/35 A guns captured by the Germans after the Italian capitulation were scrapped or ignored.
