The Type 3 120 mm guns were designed in 1914 and placed in production in 1918. They were developed from the British QF 4.7 inch Guns which had previously been produced in Japan under license from Elswick Ordnance Company, which was a part of the manufacturing firm Armstrong Whitworth & Company Limited. They were initially used as the main armament on Kawakaze-, Momi-, Minekaze-, Wakatake-, Kamikaze-, and Mutsuki-class destroyers, mounted in single-mount gun turrets. In 1922, the design received a modification, which made the barrels shorter and improved the horizontal sliding breech blocks. This modified design was given the name of Type 11 and the guns produced from this improved design were deployed on I-153- and I-171-class submarines and Otori- and Chidori-class torpedo boats, also installed in single-mount gun turrets. Both Type 3 and Type 11 guns were used widely as coastal defense artillery guns.
