ww2dbaseBolzano was the last of the three Trento-class heavy cruisers, but she was built with enough changes (due to knowledge acquired since the construction of her sister ships) that some argue she should be categorized as at least the leading ship of a sub-class. During the Spanish Civil War, she escorted Italian ships in the Mediterranean Sea with her sister ships. In mid-1942, she was damage by a torpedo launched by a British submarine. In Sep 1943, while undergoing permanent repairs at La Spezia, Liguria, Italy, she was seized by German forces as Italy signed an armistice with the Allies. Because of the serious damage, however, the Germans made no real attempt at continuing the repairs. On 22 Jun 1944, a group of Italian Navy commandos loyal to the co-belligerent government in the south raided La Spezia, capsizing Bolzano. She was refloated in 1947 and sold for scrap.
