ww2dbaseThe destroyer escort Gilmore was originally intended for Britain as a part of the Lend-Lease Program, therefore launched as HMS Halder. However, in Feb 1943, she was commissioned an American ship and sent to San Diego for her shakedown cruise. She performed troop transport and escort duties near the Aleutian Islands through most of the war.
ww2dbaseOn 25 Apr 1944, Gilmore made contact with Japanese submarine I-180. She sank I-180 in the early hours of the next day. She later was rewarded a battle star for this engagement.
ww2dbaseLater in the war on 13 Jan 1945, Gilmore became the flagship of Escort Division 14. In this role she escorted troopship convoys during the island hopping campaign. She was relieved of the role on 20 Jul. She performed several more voyages, which included anti-submarine duties, before the war ended.
ww2dbaseGilmore returned to the United States 27 Oct 1945 via the port at San Pedro, California. She was decommissioned at the end of that year, and was sold for scrap on 1 Feb 1947.
