ww2dbaseBernhard Rust, a doctor in German philology and philosophy, became a high school teacher at Ratsgymnasium in his birth city of Hannover, Germany in 1908. He served in the army during WW1, reaching the rank of lieutenant and was awarded the Iron Cross medal. He joined the Nazi Party in 1922 and was later named the district leader of Hannover and Braunschweig. In 1930, he was elected to the Reichstag. In 1933, he was appointed the Minister for Cultural Affairs of Prussia. In 1934, he became the Minister of Science, Education and National Culture of Germany. In this role, he set out to Nazify the education system, which included distilling young minds of Nazi ideals, removing science and mathematics discovered by non-Aryans from school curricula, and removing Jews from educational establishments. His policies were at times criticized as bizarre, and he was also known for issuing, changing, and repealing policies within a relatively short periods of time. He was accused of playing a role in human experimentation on prisoners. He committed suicide at the end of the war.
