ww2dbaseJoji Hattori was born in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture Japan in 1892. In 1918, he earned an engineering degree from Tokyo University. Shortly after, he obtained an engineering position with the Mitsubishi's Kobe Shipyard in Hyogo Prefecture, Japan. In 1923, he was transferred to Mitsubishi's aircraft design division in Nagoya as a senior engineer. He supported the radical reverse-gullwing idea by the young engineer Jiro Horikoshi, which ultimately resulted in the successful A5M fighter design. Under his leadership, Mitsubishi completed several more designs that would become iconic WW2-era aircraft, such as the Navy's Zero fighter (also by Horikoshi) and the Army's G4M bomber (by Kiro Honjo). In Oct 1940, he was given the Nagao Memorial Award for the excellence in aviation engineering, which he fully attributed to the achievements of the engineers who worked under him.
