ww2dbaseChung Il-kwon (Revised Romanization: Jeong Il-gwon) was born in Primorsky Krai, Russia to ethnic Korean parents. He grew up in Japanese-occupied Korea and was given the Japanese name of Ikken Nakashima. He graduated from the Tokyo Military Academy in Japan in 1940 and served with the Japanese Army in China. Toward the end of the war, he defected and joined the Chinese Nationalist Army. He returned to Korea in the late 1940s and saw action leading troops during the Battle of Incheon in 1950. He retired at the rank of general in 1957. Entering the diplomatic service, he was made the South Korean ambassador to Turkey in 1957, South Korean ambassador to the United States in 1960, and then the Foreign Minister in 1963. Between 1964 and 1970, he was elected the Prime Minister of South Korea. He passed away in Hawaii, United States in 1994.
