ww2dbaseSince Mar 1940, Colonel Eiji Nishimura was the head of Unit 1855, a branch of the Japanese Army Epidemic Prevention and Water Purification Department (Unit 731), based in Beiping, China. He also had control over a prison in Jinan, Shandong Province, China. He was charged with human experimentation with bubonic plague, cholera, and typhus. The test subjects were largely Chinese and Korean civilians. Between Unit 1855's existence between 1938 and 1945, somewhere between 300 and 1,000 test subjects were killed.
