To support Germany's campaign in the east, naval vessels were broken apart and then traveled by road and ferry boats to Romanian ports, where they were re-assembled and put into action. Submarines U-19, U-20, and U-23 were three of six submarines that made it to the Black Sea. In Aug 1944, Romania switched sides and joined the Allies, leaving German vessels in the area stranded. Unable to sail home, the three submarines were scuttled somewhere off the northern coast of Turkey. After 60 years, the three boats had been found by Turkish marine engineering team led by Selçuk Kolay. "It's one of the least well known stories of the war but one of the most interesting," he said. Mike Williams, secretary of the Nautical Archaeology Society in the United Kingdom, said "[t]his is a significant find because these U-boats were all scuttled, so they should be intact, like a sealed tube. They are unique survivors of the war."
