Wreck of HMS Olympus Discovered off Malta

10 Jan 2012

After sundown on 8 May 1942, British submarine HMS Olympus departed Malta. She struck a naval mine not far from the harbor and sank; only 9 of hte 98 men aboard survived the sinking. In 2008, British and Maltese technical divers claimed to have discovered the wreck and tentatively identified it as that of HMS Olympus, but they never returned to confirm the identification. In 2011, a survey team from the US-based Key Largo-based Aurora Trust re-established contact with the wreck via sonar. Returning to the site in Jan 2012 with a remotely-controlled and camera-equipped vehicle, Aurora Trust identified the wreck visually based on the configuration of her weaponry. On 10 Jan 2012, the government of Malta gave Aurora Trust the permission to make the announcement of the discovery.

Representatives of Aurora Trust would soon visit the British Embassy in Washington, DC, United States to share information about the wreck.
