Amazing that was 66yrs ago. In some respects it seems so recent,... in other respects it almost seems ancient! Horrible tragedy anyway.

it boggles the mind that the Germans captured over 2 million Russians the first 6 months of the war - between 12 and 14 million Russian soldiers died in the war.

PRISONERS OF WAR: UNCERTAIN FUTURE THE GULAGS
Many of these German soldiers were guarded by the NKVD Internal troops. By 1945 over 3.3 million Germans were captured.
After WWII those POWs were kept in the USSR and detailed to help re-build the country for years afterward. Many died due to over-work, illness, injuries many were murdered by other POWs and even the NKVD looked the other way and who also had a hand in the treatment and Judgement of those unfortunate men.
VERY FEW RETURNED TO THE FATHERLAND:
Many didn't live to return home, deaths of German POWs estimated to be 1,000,000 and many were reported as missing. Other Axis troops taken POW numbered as high as 570,000 many of them dying in labor camps.
Starting in 1950 some were released the survivors started to returned home others in 1955, with the last of those returned to West Germany in 1956 repatriated over ten years after the end of World War Two. The German 7th Army: Out of 90,000 men captured at Stalingrad, about 5,000 returned home.
ITS A CRUEL WORLD HERR KOMMANDANT: YOU SAID IT YOURSELF...
Those Germans that returned home were lucky many of the Soviet prisoners of war didn't they were just as mistreated by the Germans, as the Germans were by the Russians. Out of 5,300,000 Russians 3,700,000 never returned home
BY THE NUMBERS:
I'm sure the real numbers are higher the war on the Eastern Front was one of utter cruelty. Nine out of Ten German soldiers died on the Eastern Front. Russian casualties range from Ten-to-One to as high as Twenty-to-One.
Estimates today range as high as 100,000,000 million people died as a result of World War II this is directly and indirectly, and the millions who died years later suffering from wounds and illness.
On average 30,000 people died everyday during WWII that's 210,000 a week! By the time the United States entered the war, losses were about 6,600 servicemen died per month, or about 220 per day!
Another World War the deaths would be in the Billions! and civilization as we know it, would be 90% wiped out and couldn't be re-built in a few decades, it would take centuries to reach the level of technology we enjoy and then maybe we'll never reach this level again...
