BGen Twining was commanding an Army air group on a combat mission in the Solomon Islands are when his B-17E (s/n 41-2403) made a forced landing during darkness on 27 Jan 1943. A member of the plane crew can be seen in the water bringing a tow line out to a raft. The rest of BGen Twining’s party were Col Glen C Jamison of Washington, DC; Maj HC Seashoals of Cleveland, OH; Lt Edward T Brown of Nashville, TN; Lt Edward W Durant of Charleston, SC; and Sgt Wilbur A Rathbun of Powland, NY. The two PBYs of VP-91 were flown by Lt Robert Feddern, USNR and Lt Samuel I Ogden, USNR.
