"With Germany arming at breakneck speed, England lost in a pacifist dream, France corrupt and torn by dissension, America remote and indifferent... do you not tremble for your children?"Winston Churchill, 1935

One of the shortest lived formations in the United States Marine Corps during World War II was the 1st Marine Brigade (Provisional). Established on 16 June, 1941, at Charletron, South Carolina, with units drawn from the 2nd Marine Division, the Brigade was given the task of reinforcing British defences in Iceland so that the garrison could be redeployed elsewhere. The Marines departed on 22 June and arrived in Iceland on 7 July. They were put to work establishing defensive positions along the coast, mainly to the north of Reykjavik. On 22nd September the Brigade was placed under the command of the US Army's' Iceland Base Command. It was relieved by Army units and returned to the US between February and March 1942 and was disbanded in New York City on 25 March (barely a little over nine months after its creation), with its constituent units sent to rejoin the 2nd Marine Division in California.
