With all due respect to Doug Cook and his website, this photo must be dated as late January 1943. This aircraft arrived in-theater in Jan 1943 which is the same month the national insignia had the white bars added to the sides. This creates a very narrow time window for when this photo could have been taken. The caption has been amended to reflect this and we thank you for helping us take a closer look at this question.

Marking for the 97th BG, 414th BS was a white
triangle with a "Y" in the center. Below was a circle with a number inside, the 97th BG was part of the US 15th Air Force.
Operated in the Mediterranean Theater and England. Bombed targets in Italy, France, Germany, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Austria, Hungary and the Balkans.
Group was deactivated, October 1945
