Formation of G4M1s of an unidentified Kokutai
note that the bomb bay doors have been removed. Crews did this because the doors failed to open or close during a mission,
later model Betty bombers had improved bomb bay doors.

PROBLEM WITH "BETTY"

The Betty did have a problem with its bomb bay doors, believe it or not, they were
non-fuctional in flight, so most of the crews left them off.
For reconnaissance missions, ferry flights they were installed, I can imagine without the doors on it must have been cold and windy, and created a lot of drag.
