ww2dbaseThe Electric Boat Company was founded in 1899 by Isaac Rice in Groton, Connecticut, United States for the purpose of building submarines for the United States Navy. The company's first submarine was Holland VI, which was commissioned into the US Navy as USS Holland (SS-1) on 11 Apr 1900. During WW1, the company and its subsidiaries built 85 submarines and 722 submarine chasers for the US Navy. During WW2, 74 submarines were built by the Electric Boat Company. In 1952, it was reorganized as General Dynamics Corporation; in the following year, it became known as General Dynamics Electric Boat to differentiate with its new acquisition Convair. General Dynamics Electric Boat launched the first nuclear submarine USS Nautilus and the first ballistic missile submarine USS George Washington in Jan 1954 and 1959, respectively. It continues to be the primary submarine builder for the US Navy today, focusing on the construction of Virginia-class nuclear submarines.
