ww2dbaseUpon commissioning in Feb 1945, USS Carbonero served with the Fleet Sonar School at Key West, Florida, United States in Mar and Apr 1945. She arrive at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, United States in early May and departed for her first war patrol on 26 May. Off Taiwan, she served on lifeguard station until 8 Jul. After refitting at Subic Bay, Zambales, Philippine Island, she departed on 4 Aug for her second war patrol, during which she sank four sailing ships, two sampans, and two junks. The Pacific War ended during her second war patrol. After the war, she served on the west coast of the United States. In 1947, she conducted a simulated war patrol in the Western Pacific. In 1949, she was reclassified an auxiliary submarine (with new designation AGSS-337) and she was assigned the Regulus Missile Program. In 1951 she was fitted with the Fleet Snorkel modification package, and in 1953 she was fitted with missile guiding equipment. Her home port shifted to Pearl Harbor in 1957. In Jul 1959, she became the flagship of US Navy Submarine Division 12. In early 1962, her Regulus missile guidance equipment was removed, thus returning to her original designation of SS-337. In 1962, she played a role in the 1962 Operation Dominic nuclear weapon tests, stationing 30 miles from the point of detonation. During the Vietnam War, she served mainly as a lifeguard vessel, rescuing downed aviators. Carbonero was decommissioned on 1 Dec 1970, and was sunk as a target in 1975 by a Mark 48 torpedo fired by USS Pogy off Hawaii, United States.
