- US Third Army armored units penetrated the German Westwall defenses near Saarlautern, Germany. Meanwhile, the British 2nd Army mopped up the last German resistance west of the River Maas. ww2dbase [Advance to the Saar | TH]
- Communist-controlled National Liberation Front (EAM) party in Greece staged a large demonstration in Athens, which broke out in violence; 28 were killed and 148 were injured. EAM forces attempted further attacks on government forces, but they were largely defeated jointly by British and Greek government forces by Jan 1945. - Patrol Boat No. 102 detected a surfaced American submarine on the surface in the South China Sea and opened fire at 0535 hours. At 0600 hours, USS Pampanito fired 4 torpedoes at the convoy, HI-83, scoring one hit on tanker Seishin Maru. At 0607 hours, USS Pipefish fired 3 torpedoes, hitting and sinking escort ship Type D No. 64. Type D No. 63 dropped 28 depth charges in the direction of USS Pipefish, causing no damage.
