ww2dbaseThe E16A Zuiun ("Auspicious Cloud") reconnaissance seaplanes were designed as a follow-up to the E13A seaplanes. They were primarily used as carrier and land based reconnaissance aircraft, although since they were equipped with dive brakes, they were also occasionally used as dive bombers.

ww2dbaseBecause E16A Zuiun seaplanes were developed late in the war, only 256 were built by the war's end. Only the E16A1 variant design was built; E16A2, equipped with a larger engine, never advanced beyond the prototype stage.

ww2dbaseThe Allied code name for E16A Zuiun seaplanes was "Paul".

E16A Zuiun Timeline

20 Jan 1945 Warrant Flying Officer Suzuki and Warrant Flying Officer Sasaki conducted a navigation training flight aboard a E16A Zuiun seaplane at Kure, Japan; the aircraft crashed behind a hangar during landing, killing both, making them the first casualties of Japanese Navy 631 Naval Air Group. Sasaki was supposed to be married that evening.
