ww2dbaseUSS Hackleback was commissioned into service in Nov 1944. After training and shakedown cruises off the New England region of the United States, Hackleback was assigned to the Fleet Sonar School at Key West, Florida, United States and then the Panama Canal Zone for further training. In late Jan 1945, she arrived at Pearl Harbor, US Territory of Hawaii and embarked on her first war patrol on 6 Mar. In the evening of 6 Apr 1945, she made radar contact with the Japanese force centered around battleship Yamato; although she failed to attack the group on several occasions, driven away by escorting vessels, she was able to report the position of the Japanese force, leading to the air attack that sank the battleship on the next day. Her second war patrol took her to waters off the Sakishima Islands in the Ryukyu Islands, Japan on lifeguard station. Her third war patrol ended within hours as she received the news of the Japanese surrender on 14 Aug. Decommissioned in Mar 1946, she was placed in reserve with the Pacific Reserve Fleet, Mare Island Group at the Mare Island Naval Shipyard in Vallejo, California, United States. She was sold for scrap in 1968.
