ww2dbasePapanikolis was the second of the Katsonis-class submarines in the Greek Navy. It was commissioned in late 1927 with Commander P. Vandoros in command. In 1940, under the command of Lieutenant Commander Miltiadis Iatridis, she carried out war patrols in the Adriatic Sea during the Italian invasion of Greece. On 23 Dec 1940, she sank the small Italian motor ship Antonietta, and then on the next day, 24 Dec, she sank the 3,952-ton troop transport Firenze near Sazan Island. She was evacuated to the Middle East after the German invasion of Greece. Under the command of Comander Athanasios Spanidis, she sank six small Axis vessels between 11 and 14 Jun 1942, and later on transported Greek, New Zealander, and British agents and commandos to and from Greece. Under the command of Lieutenant Nikolaos Roussen, she sank a 8,000-ton cargo ship at the Alimnia islet near Rhodes, Greece. On 17 Jan 1943, she captured the 200-ton Italian sailing vessel Agios Stefanos, and on the following day, 18 Jan, sank a 150-ton vessel. Between Mar and May 1943, she sank 4 sailers totaling 450 tons. She saw little action after Oct 1944 after the Axis forces in Greece were driven out. She was decommissioned in 1945. Her conning tower was preserved and is now on display at the Maritime Museum at Piraeus, Greece.
