ww2dbaseSponsored by Mrs. Julius Furer, the submarine Pogy (SS-266) was launched in 1942. The boat was named after a trout found in Lake Tahoe, California, United States. She arrived at Pearl Harbor on 5 Apr 1943, and set out for her first patrol ten days later, venturing deep into Japanese waters near the Japanese Home Islands. She was credited with several hits, including three torpedo hits on a destroyer, and a number of kills on this first patrol before she retired to Midway. She was instrumental in the campaign to disrupt Japanese shipping, sinking 62,633 tons during the war.

ww2dbaseAt the end of the war, she was decommissioned in 1946. She was subsequently sold for scrap on 1 May 1959.

According to the information I have: My father served on the USS POGY from its launching to the time it was taken out of service. His name was Hollis Ray Larsen. In the website you can see he did the sketch first used for the USS POGY patch. I am looking for any information on him. I am an only child, he and my mother were divorced and she died when I was 5. Any information would be helpful. I have grandchildren who need to know about their heritage as much as I do.

I am curious. My dad, Ralph Fordice, served aboard the USS Pogey and had a certificate inducting him into the Order of the Mighty Mine Dodgers. However, all the official information I have been able to find out about this Order lists only 9 submarines as having taken part and the Pogey is not among them. Can anyone tell me more about this, please? Thank you so very much. Kathleen Fordice Glasscock

I am looking for some info on my husband's grandfather. His name was Earl R. Peterson and I was told he was a Quartermaster on the USS Pogy. Is there any where else I can find more info? I have a whole pile of photos he took but of course he is not in any of them. Would also like to try to compare some crew photos to what I have to see if i can identist any of them. If you have any suggestions, please email me at stefanigi77 at gmail.com Thanks!
