ww2dbaseInitially ordered as HMS Atheling for the British Royal Navy, laid down as Anguilla Bay for the United States Navy, and ultimately launched with the name of Corregidor, this Casablanca-class escort carrier was commissioned into service in Aug 1943. Joining Carrier Division 24 in the Pacific Ocean, she participated in the Gilbert Islands campaign between 10 Nov and 6 Dec 1943, launching air strikes to support troops on the ground. After repairs and reloading in San Diego, she returned to the front to participate in the Marshall Islands campaign between 22 Jan and 3 Mar 1944, mainly providing aerial support over Kwajalein. On 30 Mar 1944, she sortied out of Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands to provide air cover for the landings on Emirau Island. Between 22 and 26 Apr 1944, she participated in the air operations at Hollandia (now Jayapura), Dutch East Indies. Between 15 and 25 Jun 1944, she supported the operations on Saipan in the Mariana Islands, with her aircraft downing eight Japanese counterparts. In Jul, she supported the campaign in the Mariana Islands, providing air cover over Saipan and Guam. After receiving an overhaul at San Diego, she qualified pilots for carrier operations at Pearl Harbor, US Territory of Hawaii in Oct-Nov 1944. She held qualification training for new carrier pilots in Hawaii in Oct and Nov 1944, and operated as a member of a hunter-killer group to search for Japanese submarines in the region during that time. She spent the final months of WW2 operating out of Hawaii and in the Marshall Islands region. The war ended while she was at Pearl Harbor. Immediately after the war, she made three voyages ferrying US military servicemen from Pearl Harbor to San Diego. She was decommissioned in Jul 1946.

ww2dbaseUSS Corregidor was recommissioned into service for the Korean War in May 1951 and was assigned to US Navy's Military Sea Transport Service, ferrying servicemen, aircraft, and other cargo for US and other NATO forces in Korea. When the Lebanon crisis broke out in the summer of 1958, she sailed from Brindisi, Italy to support the landings. She was decommissioned in Sep 1958 and was sold for scrapping in the following year.

1943年7月15日 The US Navy established a new scheme for the designation of aircraft carriers. Large fleet carriers would retain the designation of CV. 10,000-ton carriers built on light cruiser hulls were changed from CV to CVL (light carriers). Auxiliary aircraft carriers, previously ACV, were redesignated as CVE (escort carriers). Finally, the new designation of CVB (large carriers) was established for the Midway-class carriers.
