ww2dbaseSubmarine Runner's keel was laid down on 8 Dec 1941, one day after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, US Territory of Hawaii. Upon completion in 1942, she held her shakedown cruise out of New London, Connecticut, United States along the east coast of the United States. In late 1942, she departed the east coast and arrived at Pearl Harbor on 10 Jan 1943 via the Panama Canal. During her first war patrol, she claimed to have hit five Japanese ships, although none would be marked as confirmed sinkings. After spending some time at Pearl Harbor for repairs and overhaul, she embarked on her second war patrol in Apr 1943, laying mines in the South China Sea and attacking Japanese shipping in the region. She embarked on her third war patrol on 27 May 1943 under the command of Lieutenant Commander Joseph Bourland, and the submarine was never heard from again. After sinking two ships in Japanese waters in Jun 1943 (as deduced from Japanese records after the war), she disappeared. She was presumed lost in Jul 1943.
