John,
My "uncle", actually Dad's cousin, was William Warren Walker, XO when your dad was first on the boat and CO for the last two patrols. We all would love to see any photos you'd like to share. Uncle Warren always was quite quiet about his service and patrols. He never thought they did enough because their tonnage sunk wasn't that great and always felt guilty about being caught on the surface and bombed.
Thanks
Bob Halvorson

Bonjour,
Pouvez vous, s'il vous plait, me mettre en relation avec un collectionneur d'enveloppes, ou une personne qui pourrait me procurer des documents sur le sous-marin.
Bien cordialement.

John, My dad (Robert Lightner) also served on the USS Snapper from 1943 until decommissioned. When in new London my dad took me and my bro aboard with him on weekends as he was the yoeman and had work to do. The crew were just kids and we were treated like kings. We could go about the sub but always had one of the crew with us. We got to watch movies while eating a tub of peaches and ice cream. While in Norfolk they took out the family members on the sub around the harbor and actually ran just to the edge of decks awash. Plus my bro and I were the only kids to attend the ships party with the whole crew. I have pictures of that party along with the whole crew. We are sitting right up front. I was only 6 or 7 at the time but I do remember it.
Not many kids can say that they lived that experience. Plus my dad relayed several war time experiences. The sub had the hull blown 18 inches out of alignment by a depth charge attack. I always thanked the good lord that he came home safely after the war. He had several submariner friends who did not make it back home. Thanks.

My father, GM1C Willis W. Roper, served on the Snapper from 4/12/1943 to 11/1/1945 (decommission). He knew your father Bob (Robert Lightner) as I have a group photo with him and also Gorham. Please email if you would like a copy and I would love any of my father. Thanks. mroper077@gmail.com
