The Schutzstaffel, better known as the SS, stylized with lightning-shaped runes, was known for its execution of Nazi racial policies. Adrian Weale's Army of Evil aimed to document the organization's evolution from its beginnings as bodyguards to party officials in the 1920s to the vast organization of the 1940s that encompassed police units, military units, prison administrators, philosophers, businessmen, and even scientists and pseudo scientists. Brief biographies were provided for a rich cast of characters such as Heinrich Himmler, Ernst Kaltenbrunner, Karl Maria Wiligut, Prince Josias, and Rudolf Höss, as was a list of deeds, whether impressive achievements or horrifying atrocities, committed by the organization in its about 20 years of existence. While much of the information seemed to already been published, the author put together a nice volume detailing the history of the SS.
I had reviewed this title in its audio book form. Don Hagen did a fine job reading the text.
