ww2dbaseMasaki Honda was an Army officer with a solid record. In the early phases of WW2, he was the Vice Chief of Staff of the China Expeditionary Army, then he became the commander of the Japanese 8th Division in Manchuria in 1940. As the war progressed, he gained wider responsibilities. In 1941 he became the head of the Military Educational Branch Armored Department, then in 1943 he commanded the Japanese 20th Army. In Apr 1944, he headed the Japanese 33rd Army in northern Burma. Although his men fought valiantly, after the Japanese front lines collapsed forces collapsed in northern Burma after the fall of Myitkyina, Lieutenant General Honda was forced to lead his force in a retreat southward toward Rangoon.
