ww2dbaseVerne Leslie Skjonsby was born in North Dakota, United States in 1910. He studied at the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland, United States between 1928 and 1932 and at the Submarine Training Facility at Norfolk, Virginia, United States in 1934. In 1942, at the rank of lieutenant commander, he became the executive officer of the submarine USS Wahoo. He was killed in 1943 when Wahoo was sunk by Japanese anti-submarine aircraft in La Pérouse Strait between Hokkaido and Karafuto (Sakhalin), Japan.
