John Radzilowski

ww2dbaseA professor at the University of Alaska Southeast, John is the author or co-author of many books including Community of Strangers, A Traveller's History of Poland, and The Eagle and the Cross. In 1998, he received the Cavalier's Cross of the Order of Merit from the President of the Republic of Poland.

» 15 Jun 1952: Christine Granville was killed by Dennis Muldowney in London, England, United Kingdom.

» 14 Jun 1944: Company commander Matthew Urban found his men pinned down by Germans in Normandie, France. With a bazooka, exposing himself to enemy fire, he destroyed two German tanks, allowing his men to counterattack and eventually overtake the Germans. He was wounded twice later on the same days and was forced to evacuate.

» 28 Jan 1944: Polish AK resistance fighters planned an assassination of German SS commander Franz Kutschera in Warsaw, Poland, but the operation was called off when the target failed to appear as expected.

» 31 Jan 2002: Francis Gabreski passed away from a heart attack at the Huntington Hospital in Huntington, New York, United States.

» 13 Mar 1942: After sundown and into the next date, Jerzy Iwanow-Szajnowicz swam across a Greek harbor to the German submarine U-133 and placed explosives on the ship which was preparing to leave on a combat mission. U-133 destroyed on 14 Mar 1942, killing 45 crew members.

» 15 Aug 1944: Matthew Urban was wounded in combat in France.
