"Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few."Winston Churchill, on the RAF

The bombers were returning from a mission to Hanover, Germany only to find England shrouded in fog and low clouds. As the 306th Bomb Group was approaching their base at RAF Thurleigh, the 305th Bomb Group on their way to RAF Chelveston five miles away emerged out of the fog on a collision course. The bombers made evasive maneuvers with most escaping safely, but two planes of the 305th BG collided and exploded. All 19 aboard both planes were killed.
