著名二戰名言
"You ask, what is our aim? I can answer in one word. It is victory. Victory at all costs. Victory in spite of all terrors. Victory, however long and hard the road may be, for without victory there is no survival."Winston Churchill

Essex (CV-9) had arrived at Pearl Harbor on May 31 1943, Yorktown (CV-10) had arrived July 24, both for the first time coming out of shakedown to active duty. They both did some training and then took part in a raid on Marcus (strikes on August 31), arriving back at Pearl on September 7. Beginning September 9, they made an unescorted, high speed run (22 to 25 knots) back to San Francisco, arriving there September 13, where they became AKs, loading the flight decks completely as pictured (Yorktown had 250 trucks on deck). They left San Francisco September 15 (showing 23 knots with flight deck inoperable and again completely unescorted until within about 100 miles of Hawaii), arriving back at Pearl on September 19. Hard to fathom that these 2, the largest and most capable carriers in the fleet, would be used in this way, but that was the logistics situation in mid-1943.
