This photo was taken from an aircraft flying from USS Hornet (Essex-class). It was not known to the attackers that the Oryoku Maru carried POWs. Once the attack began, the Japanese unchained the prisoners and allowed them to swim for their lives. Many can be seen in this photo splashing their way to shore. They did not escape, however, and many went on to die later due to the deplorable conditions imposed by the Japanese.
