Several internet sources list this photo as being the B-24 “Take Off” of the 42nd Bombardment Squadron but this is doubtful.
The original USAAF photo caption from 1943 clearly states the photo location was Funafuti and the damage was received over Nauru. 1943 captions from companion photos showing the same aircraft clearly identifies it as Lt. Russell Phillips’ plane, whose crew included Louis Zamperini as bombardier. Lt. Phillips and Louis Zamperini were members of the 372nd Bombardment Squadron for the Nauru raid but transferred to the 42nd shortly afterward.
Also, the 42nd Bombardment Squadron stood down on Feb 7 1943, before the Nauru raid, and was reformed May 20 1943, after the Nauru raid.
