This photo has long been displayed by the US Navy and others reversed left-to-right from what is seen here but that orientation shows the star on the aircraft’s wrong wing. In Aug 1943, the emblem was to be painted on the upper surfaces of an aircraft’s port wing and both the Navy and Army were very faithful to these guidelines. Reversing the Navy’s image to what is seen here means the aircraft would be facing aft on the flight deck, which is exactly what is happening in this image (see Comment to Photo 1 in this series). Also, a motion picture of this launch shows the same orientation as what is seen here (http://ww2db.com/video/27 beginning at 5:15). Why the aircraft was being launched over the stern is not clear.
