Anonymous #1: No, I am not absolutely sure about the May 15 1945 date. Bombing Germany a week after the surrender would be unusual, to say the least. This was a transcription error on my part as I wrote the caption; my source for this photo lists the date as Mar 15 1945 which would be quite a bit more reasonable. The caption has been corrected accordingly. Thank you for pointing this out.

I can assure you this was NOT May. My father was a B-24 pilot in the 328th. His aircraft was marked GO with a "Y" on the vertical stabilizer. When I first saw this picture my heart jumped. I checked his pocket notebook (unauthorized). May 28th the 328th was transfering back to the US. They left from Meeks Iceland that morning bound for Goose Bay Canada. His crew had been altered from March 15th, but didn't fly that day.
