This is a very important question for me too and I am glad you asked it. I captioned this photo as showing TBM-3s because of the extreme position of the tail hooks at the very end of the fuselage. I had been under the belief this was a mark of the TBM-3 but that is wrong, this is only true for the hook in the stowed position. The photo shows the deployed position of the hooks as they were for the Avenger from the beginning. The Navy’s list of aircraft deployed during July 1944 show 4 TBF-1Cs and 15 TBM-1Cs deployed to VT-2 aboard Hornet, so you are right. The caption has been modified and thank you for pointing this out.

Interested to know how we know these are TBM-3’s. Very important to me because I was Told -3’s didn’t make it to the pacific until very late 44 or 45. There is a dispute as to whether a tbm my dad flew was the actual tbm since it was a -3 in October of 1944.
