When I first saw this picture, I assumed the USS Macon mentioned in the caption was the airship, but it isn’t. The airship USS Macon crashed in 1935, so I would have been wrong for two different reasons. The USS Macon seen here is the heavy cruiser (CA-132) and is last in the line of ships. The airship seen above the Hudson is a K-class Airship that was almost certainly based at Lakehurst, New Jersey.

Thrilling sight. My uncle AEMC2C Joseph Flynn 1940-1946 served on the USS Wichita, USSRedwood and then Blimp Hedron #1, Lakehurst, NJ. After the war on a peacetime assignment to deliver a blimp from So Weymouth NAS in Massachusetts to Glynco NAS, Georgia, his crew decided to take a "rubberneck tour" up the Hudson River to look at the Empire State Building. What joy to have survived six years of war. Even so, they realized they could get in trouble and finally turned around and headed south!
