During 1937-38 four Soviet eskadrilii were despatched to support Chinese Nationalists fighting the invading Japanese. They were joined by 186 more I-15bis supplied to the Chinese air arm, but the I-15bis had mixed fortunes in China, being outclassed by Japanese monoplane fighters during the latter part of its service there, In early 1940 ninety-three I-153s (an evolved version of the I-15bis) were supplied to the Chinese Nationalist government for use against the Japanese, but whilst the type was manoeuvrable and frequently did well in the hands of an experienced pilot, most of the Soviet and Chinese pilots were relatively inexperienced, with inevitable results.
