Yes, I have long been aware that the Navy’s date for this photo is Dec 12th but this is incorrect. All of these ships were at sea on Dec 12th and not together. I have devoted a great deal of time trying to establish the correct date for this photo and Dec 24th fits the image the best, but Dec 2nd is a strong candidate too. The Navy’s date for a photograph very commonly corresponds to the date the photo’s file number was assigned rather than the actual date of the photograph (which is part of my reasoning for Dec 2nd). I have corresponded to NHHC over this very issue but they are unpersuaded. Thank you for taking an interest in this question but for now, the caption will remain as it is.

The ships were, from front): Langley (CVL-27) Ticonderoga (CV-14) Washington (BB-56) North Carolina (BB-55) South Dakota (BB-57) Santa Fe (CL-60) Biloxi (CL-80) Mobile (CL-63) and Oakland (CL-95).
The photo was taken from Essex (CV-9).
